Prof. Georg Lausen is joining the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Freiburg since 1994, where he was leading the research group on Databases and Information Systems until his retirement March 31, 2019.

After completion of an apprenticeship program Mathematisch-technischer Assistent at Bayer AG, Leverkusen in 1972, Georg Lausen studied at the University of Karlsruhe (TH) and received a Diploma in Industrial Engineering majoring in Computer Science/Operations Research (Diplom-Wirtschaftsingenieurwesen) in 1978. He obtained a PhD (Dr. rer. pol.) in 1982, and his Habilitation (Angewandte Informatik) in 1985 from the University of Karlsruhe (TH). From 1986 to 1987 he has been associate professor for Information Technology and its Integration Problems at the Technical University of Darmstadt, from 1987 to 1994 professor for Databases and Information Systems at the University of Mannheim. In 1990 he declined offers from the University of Essen and the University of Klagenfurt.

His research covers the areas of databases, information systems, recommender systems and RDF-technologies. He is author of the textbook Datenbanken - Grundlagen und XML-Technologien , Elsevier Spektrum Akademischer Verlag 2005, and coauthor of the textbook Models and Languages of Object-Oriented Databases, Addison Wesley, 1998.

He was speaker of the GI Special Interest Group Design Methods for Informationsystems (EMISA) from 1987 to 1990, from 2007 to 2009 speaker of the Graduiertenkolleg Mathematische Logik und Anwendungen and treasurer of Web Reasoning and Rule Systems (RR) from 2007 to 2013. He was the Dean of the Faculty Mathematik und Informatik at the University of Mannheim 1990 to 1991, the Dean of Study (Computer Science) from 2008 to 2012, respectively Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Freiburg from 2014 to 2016.

In 1999 he received the Test of Time Award from ACM SIGMOD 1989 for the paper F-Logic: A Higher-Order Language for Reasoning about Objects, Inheritance, and Scheme, and 2020 the Test of Time Award from ICDT 2010 for the paper Foundations of SPARQL query optimization. He has been granted a patent on LDAP-based distributed cache technology for XML through the US Patent Office (US 6,901,410 B2) and a patent on Adaptive Query Evaluation Techniques by the German Patent Office (DE 101 57 996).
