Service Discovery for Annotated Documents

When browsing the web we often encounter information on Web pages that is related to stored data or functions of other applications. For example, a time schedule can be matched with the personal calendar to find out about overlapping events, and reading an e-mail thread on a web forum, the function for responding to a message could be used. However, the browser cannot detect such relations because the information is not machine-readable, and manual user interaction with the respective application is required to carry out the desired task.

In contrast, annotations embedded in Web pages enable the browser to recognize the contained data. We investigate methods to provide feedback and functionality for this data which is. provided as service by other applications. The browser discovers appropriate services on the base of the annotations. Due to the embedding of the annotaions a direct user interaction with the visual representation of the respective information in the Web page is enabled.
