Seminar Content

The World Wide Web is a collection of interlinked documents such as HTML pages which are accessible via the Internet. However, HTML imposes the structure of a website over the textual content of such documents. The data contained in the text needs to be stripped out and eventually structured by a software application, e.g. by search engine.

To overcome this limitation, a new generation of Web technologies is rapidly emerging which makes it possible for the WWW to evolve into the Semantic Web. This initiative has as one of its goals the creation of a linked network of data on a global scale that is easily processable by applications. This data does not replace the documents in the current Web. It adds instead a semantic description of the resources (concepts) which appear in the text of the already existing collection of interlinked documents. Linked Data is a set of best practices based on open standards which define how this data should be published and interlinked.

The purpose of this seminar is to provide a conceptual and technical introduction to Linked Data and discuss individual approaches as well as state-of-the-art with regard to extraction, consumption, interaction, linking, sharing and enrichment as well as quality assessment of data complying with the Linked Data principles. An understanding of the basic concepts will then make it possible to discuss issues, limitations and development challenges of Linked Data.

    The aim of the kick-off event is to provide all participants with basic knowledge about Linked Data within the context of The Semantic Web. The topics as well as goals to be achieved in the written report and presentation will be introduced in this event.

Prerequisites for Passing

  • Full participation in both sessions is mandatory
  • Submission of written report (max. of 6 pages) by Dec. 23, 2014, 12.00. The template will be provided in both, MS Word and LaTeX formats. We will write an email with further details about the submission. Submission of the revised report by Feb. 13, 2015, 17.00.
  • Oral presentation of each participant (English or German); presentation 30 mins followed by 15 mins of discussion and questions; note that presentations have to be in PPT or LaTeX (no particular template is required).
  • Final presentations need to be submitted by Jan 22, 2015, 17.00 the latest. We will write an email with further details about the submission.
  • Participation in discussions and the quality of questions raised are also part of the final grade assigned.
  • The final grade is composed 60% oral presentation plus participation in discussions and 40% written report.

  • Note that the indicated paper references are only meant as starting point. Students are highly encouraged to search for other suitable references.
